A Red Team exercise is a controlled and realistic cyberattack simulation in which a group of offensive security experts (the Red Team) acts as a real-world adversary to test an organization's technology, processes, and personnel.
To this end, the Red Team represents a real threat, replicating their behavior, techniques, and tactics, and carries the cyber exercise objective through to the end: manipulating or exfiltrating information outside the organization, theft, denial of service, or fraud.
It uses tools not employed in conventional penetration tests, such as various types of malware, social engineering, or non-public exploits. Evading monitoring, maintaining discretion, and establishing persistence in compromised systems are essential premises during missions, which are conducted with hardly any imposed limitations, just as would occur in a real attack.
At the same time, the Red Team can collaborate, at various levels, with the organization's defensive or Blue Team for faster and more effective learning.
