WordPress is vulnerable to an unauthorized upgrade and XSS
Unauthorized Update and Cross-Site Scripting in WordPress via wp-admin/upgrade.php.
Antecedentes
WordPress was born in 2003 as a small piece of code to improve everyday writing and typography, and today it is the world's largest self-hosted blogging tool, with hundreds of thousands of sites and tens of millions of daily visitors.
Description
If WordPress is not on the latest version, anyone can update the application via wp-admin/upgrade.php. Furthermore, when the step parameter is 1, the "Have fun" link takes the value of the backto parameter, which allows a Cross-Site Scripting attack to steal user sessions.
Business impact
If the update fails, WordPress may become unavailable. If the cross-site attack succeeds, the confidentiality and integrity of the content are affected.
Affected systems
All versions of WordPress.
Solución
WordPress considered it not as serious as it seemed, so no patch was released.
